The End of the Dial Tone Still Buzzes

Its been a year since i was first introduced to the experience ofThe End Of The Dial Tone Radical Collaborative Music Band Band. Just like my first introduction, the most recent event was in the upstairs parlor of the Gator Club. Last year, from the first moment Danny Jones started channelling Buddy Wakefield and the hodgepodge of musicians started laying down a groove that built to an orgasmic crescendo of word, sound, fury, and flow, I knew that I'd stumbled onto something magical, something so profound in its simplicity that I knew the seed would germinate into something wondrous. This year, the harvest is blooming.

Although there is a different lineup of performers at each of the improvised events, it seems that the rehearsals are creating some sort of collective harmonic convergence whereby with each experience, the whole of our music scene grows more synchronized and has a greater capacity for finding those moments of optimal artistic flow where the music reminds us what it's really about. From this phenomenon, this new ritual of Sarasota musicians to simply celebrate the essence of collaboration and groove, we seem to be training ourselves in finding that similar flow in our lives, bringing our visions and goals together to help create the community we all long for. It is indeed a case of life imitating art.

We still seem to fumble through it from time to time. We still l give into the temptation of playing to the beat of our egos and losing the rhythm from time to time, but we're also encouraging one another to find our own voices and empowering the growth of the collective chorus of the Sarasota music scene. We still have a ways to go to get through this symphony, but the first movement had been incredible.

    Healing our Grief

    Grief

One out of two Americans suffers from depression. In one way shape or form, we are all experiencing the effects of Grief. Be it the loss of a loved one or the absence of the pure essence of truly living that we long for in this version of reality we have created for ourselves, we all seem to be grieving the loss of something.

Nothing comforts grief like the compassionate embrace of a woman. Designed to nurture and to bring new life into the world, the role of women has been largely subjugated to be that of an inferior man in this masculine designed system of civilization. Perhaps the best way through our grieving process is to reconcile with the feminine aspects of ourselves, using that energy to kiss our boo-boos, hold us in a loving embrace, and show us how to birth new life from the destitution of our grief.

    Don't Care Nothin' About Apathy

Moving up through Hawkins' stages of consciousness, we move from Guilt up to Apathy, and though we have found our way along the Unbroken Path to gain some sense of pro activity, to see the possibilities made manifest by others, and even understand that there is a higher power, this feeling of apathy can still do much to dissuade us from out growth and evolution. As a sense of hopelessness and perpetual victimhood in our relations to the world, or maybe to our higher power, apathy tells us that any effort we may make is only in vain so we may as well not even try. Apathy is that part of your ego that needs the status quo of stagnancy and wants you to cease and desist from your journey of becoming lest this lesser form of yourself be destroyed on the process.

We must find it within us to break free of this bondage of apathy and realize that our activity in the world is of the utmost importance. We are not helpless, none of us. We are not victims except when we allow ourselves to be. Realize you are more than just survival, you are life waiting to blossom more fully.

    You Can Do Magic

Being Proactive and setting out on our journey to move beyond the folly of our past, the first character we meet is The Magician. He stands behind a table with items on it. Each of the items represent an element of nature to inform us of the resources as our disposal and as an aspect of humanity to guide us in implementing those resources for the greatest good, to make the magic of which we are capable.

The Magician is the first numbered card of the Major Arcana, or Fool's Journey, because he represents the primary goal of the journey itself. The Magician stands as the ultimate hero because he seemingly creates something from nothing with ease and grace, the life that we all want for ourselves.

The Magicians in our lives are everyone who makes us go, "Whoa! How did you do that?" What makes us fools is that we don't quite understand that   we have it within us to do the same.

    Making Money Sacred

A few months ago, I met a guy named Charles Eisenstein as he was passing through town to discuss his latest book "Sacred Economics." Although I'm sure he is much more knowledgable on the subject of economics than I am, we seem to have some very similar theories on how the popular monetary system thrives on the creation of lack and scarcity whereas a healthy economic system should thrive on abundance and well-being. And although my culture seems to be mired in this current system of poverty development, with guys like Charles around, at least we can start to get a clearer idea of what we should be moving towards.

"Sacred Economics" is about recognizing the true value of life again, both through the gifts we offer and those that are offered to us. At a time when the financial ails are being felt by so many of us as this mother of all Ponzi schemes reaches its bitter end, we can find hope in the fact that there are alternative methods of economics that do not necessitate slavery, debt, alienation, competition, or endless growth. We can, in fact, develop more sustainable systems that do more to celebrate the values of diversity, creativity, community, and the environment that the current structure so woefully undervalues.

Whether you are anticipating the collapse of the current system or are seeking to develop an alternative currency to help buoy it, "Sacred Economics" offers an extremely insightful view into the history of our economic system and a beautiful vision of where we go from here. In keeping with his concept of the "gift currency," you can read Charles' book for free on his website at www.sacred-economics.com.
